Last week the Department for Transport (DfT) released a statistical report on Road Conditions in England.
The report, which presents information on the condition of local authority roads, motorways and trunk roads in England, showed the state of local authority roads in England has remained broadly unchanged since 2006/7.
Sue Percy, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation said, “The DfT’s report on Road Conditions in England highlights the need for sustained investment on local authority roads.
"As local and national budgets will continue to be squeezed, CIHT believe that different ways of raising funding for road maintenance will be needed including giving local authorities the power to create their own user charging schemes, such as small-scale congestion charges on local roads.
"As reactive maintenance is extremely inefficient, CIHT believe that the Government should investigate the use of 10-year funding plans for highways maintenance by giving more continuity and control to local highway authorities in how they deliver their maintenance activities in accordance with asset management principles.”
