The Department for Transport has today launched its Transport Infrastructure Skills Strategy that sets out how government plans to create 30,000 apprenticeships in road and rail by 2020 and acknowledges the important role played by CIHT in addressing the skills agenda.
The strategy contains government commitments and provides guidance and features examples of good practice across the industry.
Using CIHT’s ‘Routes to Diversity & Inclusion Toolkit’ is recommended for industry suppliers in the recruitment, retention and development of their workforce.
Sue Percy, CIHT Chief Executive said:
“The skills shortage challenge is a serious one that has the potential to undermine the Industry’s ability to deliver the key infrastructure projects that are underway or in the pipeline, as well as the on-going maintenance work required to keep our transport infrastructure fit for purpose.
This transport and infrastructure skills strategy is vital if we are to meet the Government’s infrastructure targets and remain competitive in a global market.
"CIHT has been calling for the development of a coordinated approach on skills for some time, so we welcome this new strategy. We are pleased to see that CIHT’s work on Diversity and Inclusion and materials to promote careers in the Industry to young people have been recognised.
"CIHT will continue to work with the Department for Transport and leaders from across the industry to help implement the recommendations outlined in this strategy.”
