Amey has been awarded its second Asset Support Contract by the Highways Agency.

The contract is for Area 8 in the East of England, is worth up to £200M over five years and covers more than 800km of carriageway.

Highways Agency asset delivery director David Brewer said: “I am delighted to be working with Amey and to be building on an established relationship to deliver a more cost effective and efficient network in the East of England.”

Amey chief executive Mel Ewell added: “The award of Area 8 supports our ongoing strategy to grow our market share in this sector.”

Asset Support Contracts are being phased in to replace existing Managing Agent Contractor arrangements for maintaining and improving motorways and trunk roads in England. They look to reduce the cost of road maintenance by 25% by 2015.

Asset Support Contracts are said by the Agency to incentivise the supply chain to deliver better results for road users at reduced cost. More than 90% of the Agency’s expenditure is delivered through contractors, so encouraging more efficient working practices is seen as a crucial means of driving down cost.

Amey also holds an Asset Support Contract for major roads in East Anglia. Five Asset Support Contracts have been awarded by the Highways Agency to date. Other areas covered by the new arrangement are Central Southern England, the North West and South West England.
