Last week’s General Election result has been broadly welcomed by transport sector commentators who say that a Conservative Government is likely to provide a consistency of policy and approach following the previous Tory/Liberal Democrats Coalition.

RAC Foundation director Professor Stephen Glaister said: “Transport policy is a long term game and the Election has at least delivered a degree of stability and continuity.

“There is also the hope that a majority Government unhindered by the demands and compromises of coalition might also be prepared to introduce more radical policies in areas such as road safety, where we would like to see the introduction of graduated driver licensing.”

AECOM’s strategic highways director Dave Beddell said: “Continuity with policy and key decision makers is welcome and consistency is needed at a time with unprecedented levels of investment across all levels of transport. Now we need to accelerate programmes across the UK including the Road Investment Strategy.”

Civil Engineering Contractors Association chief executive Alasdair Reisner added: “The last five years have seen a steady push to improve the way infrastructure is managed through visibility of investment and workloads. It is now imperative that the Government recognises the importance to the market of maintaining long term certainty for, and fully commits to, the existing project pipeline.”

Institution of Civil Engineers director general Nick Baveystock said: “Continuity is the single most important thing for the infrastructure supply chain and investment community. We must start moving towards a longer term vision for infrastructure which is shielded from political short termism.”
