130904_EustonStation_224Camden Council is calling for Euston to be rebuilt as a two tier railway station, with High Speed 2 trains using one level and existing services another. Council leader Sarah Hayward says this would allow Euston to be redeveloped without a significant increase in the station footprint and save nearby homes and business premises from demolition.

The council remains opposed to HS2 and is appealing to the Supreme Court for the project to be halted. But if the scheme does proceed Camden wants the redevelopment of Euston station “to be got right”.

“We have consulted local engineers who say there is sufficient depth to create a ‘double deck down’ station before you hit London Underground lines and other utility services,” Ms Hayward said last week. “A comprehensive rebuild such as this would also allow more commercial development to be incorporated over the station.”

She added that current proposals to redevelop the station – including the introduction of platforms for high speed trains beside existing platforms – would mean “greater disruption and none of the benefits” for the people of Camden.

If HS2 were to proceed Ms Hayward would prefer that rail services terminate further out of London such as at Old Oak Common for a few years. This would, she added, allow sufficient time for Euston to be redeveloped into a “palace that rivals St Pancras”.

HS2 Ltd’s area manager for Euston, Sarah Hunter, said a ‘double deck’ platform arrangement had been considered for the station, but is not being taken forward. “We are currently reviewing the results of a recent public consultation and will continue to work with the London Borough of Camden and take on board its views and suggestions.”

She added that Old Oak Common has insufficient space to construct a temporary terminus.
