Exciting opportunity - your chance to get involved and shape the future of CIHT

5th Nov 2020

On 24 June 2020, the voting members present at the AGM unanimously agreed to approve the recommendations put forward by the Governance Review Group including amendments to the Royal Charter and to the Byelaws. The new Governance arrangements will be introduced from June 2021 (subject to Privy Council approval).

Among the confirmed recommendations, the following changes will affect the 2021 Council Election and appointments:

1) Increase number of Council Members
This change will provide further diversification of skills and experience and include a wider range of membership grades. As a result, the following vacancies will be available in 2021:
- Two additional Ordinary Members vacancies (along with 4 vacancies of current Council members stepping down).
- Four additional Regional Members vacancies – one extra vacancy from each devolved nation and one from the Republic of Ireland.
- Four additional Nominated Members vacancies – comprising up to 6 Young Professionals and a further 2 representing Associate members.

2) Members can stand for Council elections with 4 supporters
Reducing the number of supporters to 4 rather than 8 will make it more attractive for a wider representation of members to run in the Council elections.

3) Extend voting rights to Associates, Graduates, Apprentices and Part Time Students
The previous provision of voting members being only full Members and Fellows was not compatible with a progressive and inclusive Institution.

Voting members keen to influence change within the industry will be able to put their names forward in the upcoming Council Elections 2021 to run for Ordinary Member; Regional and National Member Vacancies will be appointed by the respective region/nation and Nominated Members will be appointed by Council.

There are plenty of opportunities for members to come onto Council through various routes. Don’t miss the opportunity to get involved and shape your Institution.

So, what does Council do?

From June 2021 Council will meet three times a year (once outside London) and is responsible for advising the Board of Trustees on the strategic and professional direction of the Institution.

It acts as a sounding board for Trustees and directors as part of policy development and also hosts outside speakers who contribute to debate, helping to shape CIHT positioning on specific issues.

In addition, Council’s role includes approving nominations for Honorary Fellowships and Awards and the appointment of Trustees. Members serve on Council for three years after which they can seek re-election for a further term. For more information on any of the above contact Peter Connolly on governance@ciht.org.uk

The call for nominations to stand in CIHT’s Council Elections 2021 will open on 6 January 2021 and will close on 26 February 2021. Nominations must be submitted online at mi-nomination.com/ciht
