The survey carried out by the business group shows that 68% of companies regard the road network as less reliable compared to five years ago, with only 11% saying it is more reliable. In total 47% of companies believe the roads meet their needs, with almost as many (41%) saying it does not.
Meanwhile 36% of respondents believe that the rail system is less reliable than it was half a decade ago and 39% say it does not meet their needs.
“Businesses rely on the road and rail networks to connect with customers, suppliers and staff,” said British Chambers of Commerce head of business environment Jan Gratton. “It’s concerning that many businesses believe reliability has worsened in recent years, particularly on the road network.
“Capacity constraints, congestion and delays in the development of new routes have left businesses frustrated.”
She added that, in order for the UK to succeed post-Brexit, investing in physical and digital infrastructure will be vital to ensure the country’s prosperity and competitiveness.
As a result of travel delays experienced in the previous month, 52% of businesses reported increased direct travel costs, 33% had been restricted in their access to existing or potential customers, and 30% had increased costs of products or services.
In addition 70% of respondents reported experiencing road traffic congestion in the 30 days before the survey was conducted, 57% motorway traffic congestion, and 49% road and rail maintenance.
