CIHT’s Professional Development Framework is an on-line system that offers licensed employers a structured approach to professional development for their employees working in Highways and Transportation.

CIHT’s new Professional Development Framework is the only competency-based training programme that incorporates both engineering and transport planning competencies and enables users to work towards achieving CEng, IEng, EngTech and Chartered Transport Planning Professional (CTPP) status.

Sue Percy CBE, Chief Executive, CIHT said:

“Our Professional Development Framework is a great asset to employers in our sector and of huge value to individuals. As well as confirming their commitment to developing their employees, it will provide a relevant and appropriate structure for managing the career development of people working in Highways and Transportation occupations.”

“CIHT’s framework has been designed and approved by CIHT and our partner organisations and provides a valuable professional development tool for the sector.”

The London Borough of Southwark have a range of officers, working on issues including reactive and preventative maintenance of the highway and adjacent structures, flood defence and supporting new developments. Every officer within Southwark Council has a performance plan and a professional development plan, which officers use to fill in gaps in their knowledge. This has made it an ideal user of CIHT’s Professional Development Framework.

Graeme Lake, Highways Asset Manager, London Borough of Southwark said:

“We wanted to set up a training agreement for our Highway Engineers with a professional body, but found it difficult as a London Borough to guarantee that we would take on four or five engineers each year and progress them through to their Chartered Professional Review.”

“CIHT's new Professional Development Framework is more suited to our engineer's needs and can be flexible enough to be applied to our technicians (working towards Eng Tech) and our engineers working towards either IEng or CEng qualifications.”

John Hall, Professional Development Officer, CIHT said:
“CIHT is thrilled to welcome Southwark Council as a Framework user and a Public Sector Partner; this is a perfect example of two organisations working in tandem for the greater good of the sector.”

What is the Framework?

The Professional Development Framework is an on-line learning system that offers employers a structured approach to professional development for their employees working in Highways and Transportation. The Framework allows users to record knowledge and experience gained at work and benchmark their progress against professionally recognised standards.

The Framework consists of two parts:

  1. Initial Professional Development – this part of the Framework is designed to be used by early career professionals as an initial development programme and helps to support structured career development and embed a continuous learning culture. The programme is made up of 11 Highways and Transportation competence areas that have been mapped to Engineering (EngTech, IEng, CEng) and Transport Planning (TPP) standards. Users can follow a structured pathway to their chosen qualification.
  2. Continuing Professional Development – this part of the Framework is designed to be used by professionals at any level of experience. The Framework allows users to record and reflect on their current learning and development skills, then create a bespoke professional development plan to support their objectives and progress their careers.
