CIHT is pleased to be a principal supporter of Highways UK. Highways UK is running at the NEC, Birmingham on 7/8 November, the free event comprises a multi-stream conference and major exhibition. This event for the people and organisations involved in planning, designing, building, operating and future-proofing the UK's road network. As part of Highways UK, CIHT will be running free to attend industry briefings that provide the opportunity to take part in interactive sessions looking at some of the latest initiatives and thinking in the highways and transportation sector.

CIHT Industry Briefings

The programme will include:

Matthew Lugg OBE, President, CIHT - Matthew will discuss his presidential theme ‘Delivering services for people’ and highlight how and why the industry should focus on delivering what customers need. Matthew will also outline the initial thoughts of CIHT’s 'Lugg Review of local highway infrastructure funding and governance’.

Steve Rowsell / Andrew Roach-Bowler from Rowsell Wright Ltd will explore ‘Procuring successful outcomes’. This will explain how to deliver successful highways & transportation projects through effective procurement.

Roads to Diversity’, a discussion panel where women from the Highways industry will engage in conversations regarding the challenges of working in the transportation industry. The panel, chaired by Sue Percy, Chief Executive, CIHT will include:

  • Louise McCann, General Manager, KierWSP – WICE Best Woman in Highways 2018
  • Melanie Clarke, Director of Customer Service, Highways England
  • Jodie Rowbottom, Head of Development, Birmingham Airport & Vice Chair, CIHT West Midlands   
  • Nicola Blaney, Senior Engineer, Jacobs, CIHT Young Professionals of the Year 2018    

Transport Planning Strategies’ - Lynn Basford will be highlighting the key parts of the CIHT Futures project and exploring the implications of different future scenarios for transport policy and practice and Nicola Cane, Head of Strategic Planning and Research, Transport for Greater Manchester will be showcasing 'TFGM’s key plans and proposals'.

In addition, CIHT will be hosting a reception that will be 'celebrating women in transport' and a corporate partner engagement session.

As a supporter of ‘Tomorrow’s Engineers Week’, our Young Professionals Network will be hosting a ‘Transport Trailblazers’. This session will feature inspirational quick-fire presentations from those who are making an impact on the industry at an early stage of their career. Looking at how panelists got into transportation, how they are progressing their career and what inspires them to make a bigger impact in the industry.  It will explore how younger people can get involved with nationally significant agendas. The panel will include:

  • Ed Downer, Principal Transport Planner, Mott Macdonald & Chair of CIHT’s Young Professional Network
  • Richard Carrington, Founder at FlowX & Freelance Data Scientist
  • Laura Menéndez González, Design Support Technologist, Tarmac & CIHT West Midlands
  • Josh & Charlie Sampson, Apprentices, FM Conway
