In choosing my Presidential theme of ‘Shaping Tomorrow Today’ I wanted to focus on the extent to which each and every one of us makes a difference on a daily basis.
Whether it is maintaining our existing asset, delivering new infrastructure, or planning for the future, what we do matters: for our family and friends, our communities and our businesses.
Another way we can make a difference is by getting involved in the work of CIHT.
I was first introduced to CIHT by my colleagues whilst working for Devon County Council. Getting involved with the regional committee was a great way to meet my peers and be welcomed into the wider CIHT family. Whether it’s your first day in the profession or you’ve got years of experience, the warmth of the welcome is just the same.
Very quickly I realised that being part of the regional committee gave me an opportunity to broaden my professional knowledge and network. I gained insights into other aspects of our profession, I developed an understanding of how the work of others influenced and shaped my day job. And I realised very quickly that it allowed my voice to help shape wider debates that affected my day job; I could make a difference.
Just as importantly, I realised that being a member of the regional committee offered me an insight into the work of CIHT more widely.
I found that my interest in discussing the hot topics of the day, combined with my willingness to get involved, led to invitations to sit on one of CIHT’s Strategic Boards. And before not too long I found myself elected to Council.
CIHT’s regions and nations committees continue to be a great way of getting involved, offering you the change to extend your knowledge, gain insight and widen your professional network.
And as a committee member you can put yourself forward to represent your region or nation on CIHT Council. It’s an important role offering as it does the opportunity to shape the future of CIHT, to listen to industry thought leaders and participate in debates that tackle the key challenges we face as an institution, and as a profession.
And as a regional representative on CIHT Council you help choose the future leadership of CIHT… one day you may find yourself a Trustee, maybe the Chair of a Strategic Board, and then one day, President or Chair of the Board of Trustees.
Getting involved in the work of CIHT’s regions and nations was one of the best career choices I ever made. I’ve met people who remain friends as well as colleagues. I’ve learnt things that have helped develop me as a professional. And I’ve been able to help CIHT deliver its objectives of being there to support its members and benefit wider society.
My journey with CIHT so far has been an enriching, enjoyable and exciting one… and it all started by getting involved with a regional committee.
Give it a go yourself. You never know quite where it might take you. And you’ll realise, once again, that what we do makes a difference.
Our CIHT Regional and National AGMs will continue throughout the month of May. It is the best opportunity to join your regional committee. You can find details of your Regional AGM on your CIHT Regional or National page or in our Annual General Meetings Hub.
