As part of our myth buster campaign we are celebrating a CIHT Fellow who whilst qualified in the UK has continued and deepened her engagement with CIHT in Trinidad and Tobago. Katherine has been a member of CIHT since 2002 and is the first female registered Transport Planning Professional in Wales, and the first BAME registered Transport Planning Professional in UK.

For transport professionals working internationally, maintaining high standards and staying connected to global best practice is essential. Katherine Agong, a Chartered Transport Planning Professional and Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), exemplifies the value of CIHT membership for professionals operating beyond the UK.

With over 23 years of experience in transport planning and engineering across public and private sectors, Katherine’s career spans major global consultancies and senior government roles in Trinidad and Tobago. Her CIHT membership has provided her with recognition, credibility, and a professional network that extends across continents.

Being part of CIHT connects overseas professionals to the UK’s chartered standards, enabling them to benchmark their work against international best practice. It also opens access to cutting-edge knowledge, continuing professional development (CPD), and opportunities to engage with transport policy and innovation worldwide.

Katherine's involvement as CIHT’s representative on the board of the UK’s Transport Planning Society highlights how international members can actively contribute to shaping the profession. CIHT membership also supports career mobility, as seen through Katherine’s dual registration with both the Engineering Council UK and the Board of Engineering of Trinidad and Tobago.

Today, as an independent consultant and PhD researcher specialising in public transport in the Global South, Katherine continues to leverage her CIHT affiliation to stay informed and connected. Her commitment to inclusive mobility and voluntary advocacy underscores the broader mission shared by many CIHT professionals—to use transport as a force for social good.

For professionals working overseas, CIHT provides more than a title—it offers a gateway to lifelong learning, leadership opportunities, and a global community of peers working towards a more sustainable and equitable transport future
