Resurfacing on the Hammersmith Flyover starts on Friday as maintenance work on the viaduct enters its final phase.

The flyover will be closed in one direction for 10 weekends from 30 May until the middle of August to allow concrete deck repairs, resurfacing and waterproofing works on the structure to be completed.

Transport for London says this work will help extend the life of the flyover as well as reduce the need for further maintenance in the future.

Director of asset management Dana Skelley said: “Our work to complete vital maintenance works to the Hammersmith Flyover is progressing well. These weekend closures are required to allow us to complete the next section of works as quickly as possible.”

The eastbound carriageway will be closed for the first five weekends, before switching to the westbound carriageway for the remaining five weekends. Affected traffic will be diverted via the road network beneath the flyover and the A40 Western Avenue.

Work is currently under way by main contractor Costain to upgrade the central reservation and drainage within the structure, with installation of the first new strengthening cables to begin from August. Later in the year steel bearings within the viaduct will be replaced.

TfL said it continues to support the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham as it works up more detailed proposals for ambitious plans to create a new road tunnel underneath Hammersmith. It added that this plan would need to be funded through the wider redevelopment of the area.
