The Government has published a consultation on proposals for transforming the Highways Agency into a government-owned company, seeking to guarantee this through legislation to be introduced in 2014.

The consultation also sets out proposals on:
•    A long-term framework for roads investment – through the Roads Investment Strategy (RIS), containing performance specifications, guarantees on funding, and a defined funding and investment programme.
•    Setting up an independent watchdog to ensure that the interests of road users are represented and the company's performance is subject to effective scrutiny and challenge.

CIHT welcomes the proposals, believing that a long-term strategy will improve certainty and therefore investor and supplier confidence.

CIHT will be developing a response to the consultation based on discussions with Council and our Corporate partners but would welcome any views from members to inform that response.  Please email: technical@ciht.org.uk
