Senior transportation figures have been recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list, including Transport for London managing director of planning Michèle Dix FCIHT.

Dr Dix – who is poised to become Crossrail 2 managing director on 5 February – was honoured with a CBE for services to the transport industry in the capital.

London’s transport commissioner Sir Peter Hendy described her as “the best transport planner in Britain” and “a female pioneer in the male dominated world of civil engineering and transport planning”.

Dr Dix has been managing director of planning at TfL since June 2007 – a role which has seen her work across all areas of transport in the capital including helping to develop the Mayor’s Transport Strategy.

She said: “It is an honour to receive this award, especially as we are celebrating 100 years of women working in the transport industry. My role is hugely rewarding and I am very proud to have worked on some of the key transport projects that make a contribution to improving life in the capital.”

Richard de Cani will succeed Dr Dix at TfL, moving on from his current role as director of strategy and policy.

Other transportation professionals recognised with CBEs in the New Year’s Honours include Transport Scotland chief executive David Middleton, BAM Nuttall chief executive Steve Fox, Costain chief executive Andrew Wylie, Department for Communities and Local Government chief planner Stephen Quartermain and Laing O'Rourke (Europe) managing director Paul Sheffield.

Paul Forman FCIHT of the Ministry of Defence was awarded an OBE for services to Defence. Department for Transport team leader Steven Berry and Network Rail’s route managing director for the South East David Ward also received OBEs, for services to local transport resilience and to the rail industry respectively.

MBEs were awarded to Department for Regional Development Northern Ireland engineering technician Henry Armstrong for services to transport and charitable fundraising, to Fermanagh Community Transport director David Monaghan for services to rural transport in Northern Ireland, and to WSP senior civil engineer Claire Gott for services to civil engineering and for charitable work in Cameroon.
