The UK government has today given the go-ahead for a third runway at Heathrow Airport.
IHT believes that the Government's decision makes sense for Heathrow Airport which as a key transport hub has a major role in ensuring the UK stays competitive in a global economy.
IHT believe there needs to be increased infrastructure funding in order to improve surface transport links that are required to cater for increases in traffic growth. But it is important that any environmental safeguards for Heathrow must be set into a UK-wide context.
The recent Climate Change Bill regrettably excludes international aviation. IHT believe that we need a national debate concerning how much growth in international flights from UK airports we can allow whilst accepting that there must be consequential higher reductions in carbon emissions from other market sectors.
