The framework is an online, competency based training programme that allows users to record knowledge and experience gained at work and benchmark their progress against professionally recognised standards.

It is the only such programme that incorporates both engineering and transport planning competencies and enables users to work towards achieving CEng, IEng, EngTech and Chartered Transport Planning Professional (CTPP) status.

“I believe the Professional Development Framework will be a great asset to employers in our sector and of huge value to individuals,” said CIHT chief executive Sue Percy. “As well as confirming their commitment to developing their employees, it will provide a relevant and appropriate structure for managing the career development of people working in highways and transportation occupations.”

The framework consists of two parts – Initial Professional Development and Continuing Professional Development. The former supports the development of early career professionals and aims to embed a continuous learning culture. It is made up of 11 competency areas and allows users to follow a structured pathway to their chosen professional qualification.

The Continuing Professional Development component is designed to be used by practitioners at any level of experience, who can record and reflect on their current learning and development skills and create a bespoke plan to support their objectives and progress their careers.

Sue Percy emphasised: “Society needs sustainable, integrated, environmentally friendly and safe transport systems. To make that necessity a reality, the highways and transportation industry must have professionals who are ethical, highly qualified with technical and practical experience and equipped with the most up to date and relevant approaches to delivery.

“But capability alone is not enough,” she added. “They must also possess the passion and determination to operate successfully in a fast moving technological, political and social landscape.”

Employers must be registered as Licensed Framework Organisations with CIHT for their employees to gain registered user status and access the framework.
