Road pricing has been discussed in the UK for a long time, but only recently has the idea gained more traction as becoming a reality on roads in the UK.
Today's Telegraph's comment section headline was: 'Road pricing is inevitable – on both sides of the Atlantic'. Prior to this there was speculation that Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor was considering this with the headline in Sky News in November last year: 'Rishi Sunak eyes 'pay-by-the-mile' road pricing scheme ahead of £40bn tax threat from electric vehicle drive'.
CIHT has long called for road pricing to manage demand on UK roads. However, with the phasing out of petrol and diesel vehicles now announced for 2030 there appears to be more likelihood than any time previously that some from of charging will be required. In CIHT's Improving Local Roads report they called for some form of road pricing to manage both congestion and carbon.
What do you think, will we see pay-by-the mile road pricing in the UK? And, if so, when and how should this be implemented. Join the discussion on CIHT Connect.
