Have your say on the future of the profession

14th Apr 2026

The Membership Applications Panel (MAP) plays a vital role in shaping the future of the highways and transportation profession. The Panel is authorised to confer Fellowship of CIHT, assessing applications against CIHT’s Fellowship attributes framework and agreeing recommendations for Fellowship. Panel members ensure that applicants demonstrate professional excellence, leadership, influence, and impact, while upholding CIHT’s values of fairness, integrity, and inclusion.

Why join?

Serving on MAP is a rewarding way to give back to the profession, while also enhancing your own professional development. Panel membership offers you the opportunity to:

  • Contribute directly to recognising excellence and leadership in highways and transportation
  • Gain insight into a wide range of career paths, disciplines and areas of practice across the sector
  • Influence the future direction and leadership of the profession
  • Expand your professional network and exchange ideas with senior peers
  • Enhance your professional profile through the prestige of Panel membership

Many Fellows are motivated to join MAP because of the opportunity to reflect the views of their peers, raise the profile of their sector, and positively influence the profession’s future.

Who can join?

We welcome applications from CIHT Fellows who are:

  • Actively contributing to the highways and/or transportation profession in a recognised area of practice
  • Recently retired but able to bring relevant experience, insight and judgement to the Panel

Panel composition aims to reflect the diversity of CIHT’s membership, with representation across geography, sectors, career backgrounds and both traditional and emerging areas of practice.

What do I need to join?

To be effective as a MAP member, you will need to demonstrate:

  • A broad understanding of the highways and transportation profession and current practice
  • Familiarity with CIHT’s vision, mission, values and strategic objectives
  • An ability to apply sound, independent judgement when assessing applications
  • An appreciation of attribute-based assessment, focusing on impact, leadership, contribution and commitment, rather than job titles alone

We are also looking for individuals who are enthusiastic about the future of the sector, committed to fair and unbiased decision-making, and able to work constructively as part of a Panel.

What is the commitment?

  • Appointments are for a three-year term, with the possibility of extension in line with the Terms of Reference
  • Most activity is undertaken remotely
  • Panel members typically review Fellowship applications monthly, with potential increases during peak periods such as CIHT’s summer free transfer campaign
  • Members are expected to maintain confidentiality and comply with data protection requirements throughout the process

What Panel members say

Ross Speirs, former Chair of the Membership Applications Panel, reflects:

Being on the Panel has given me further opportunities to give back to the profession by ensuring, in a small way, that we continue to recognise highly qualified professionals within the transportation sphere, who themselves go on to promote and develop all aspects of transportation engineering.

Our commitment to inclusion

At CIHT, we believe that diversity strengthens decision-making, creativity and innovation. We are committed to fairness, inclusion and equality of opportunity, and to creating a profession where everyone feels they belong.

We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who may be underrepresented within CIHT’s membership.
