Amey has been awarded the Highways Agency’s £200M, five year Asset Support Contract for Area 6 in East Anglia.

The contract covers the maintenance and improvement of nearly 1000km of strategic roads across Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and parts of Cambridgeshire. It goes live on 1 April 2014.

Area 6 is the fourth Asset Support Contract let by the Highways Agency to replace Managing Agent Contractor contracts in England. The new arrangements are said to deliver substantial savings over the current way of working.

Highways Agency asset delivery director David Brewer said: “ASCs are less prescriptive, enabling our suppliers to be more innovative about the way their services are delivered. Better value is what we are looking for from our contractors.”

The new contracts offer incentives for innovation and efficiency but no reward for over delivery. They also feature simplified pricing mechanisms and a higher cost threshold for works to allow more procurement through the ASC rather than by separate tender.

Highways Agency’s Eastern divisional director David Gingell added: “More than 90% of the Agency’s expenditure is delivered through contractors. That is why we need to work with an efficient, effective and professional supply chain to drive down costs and deliver the highest quality service. I am confident that this new contract will do just that."
