Many children will have enjoyed receiving Lego sets for Christmas and – if one engineer has his way – young people may be able to enjoy building a scale model of the Forth rail bridge in future years.

Michael Dineen from Transport Scotland spent four months building a scale model of the crossing out of 3000 of the plastic bricks. He is now seeking the support of 10,000 people to help persuade Lego to make the model into an official set.
“To be able to say I was the first person to orchestrate having Scotland’s very first official Lego set on shelves around the world would rank as one of the proudest moments of my life,” Michael told TP Weekly News.
“Lego has always been incredibly popular among the younger generations, with a recent notable increase in adults rekindling the love affair they once had. Where better to inspire kids to consider a career in civil engineering than using the building blocks that continue to be such a massive part of so many children’s lives.”
Michael adds that he, like many, grew up with a tub full of random Lego pieces and received sets for birthdays and at Christmas. In recent years, he has started to buy sets for himself and display them on shelves in his house.
“The nature and offering of sets has vastly changed from when I was growing up, but hopefully the next generation will be lucky enough to buy a set of the Forth Bridge.”
Michael’s model extends to a length of 4.7m and stands 300mm high. It is currently on display in the reception area of his employer Jacobs’ office in Glasgow, offering a rather unique conversation piece for visitors.
