This week the Transport Select Committee's call for evidence on the funding and governance of local roads closed, calling for bold thinking CIHT' submission said;
• The current funding system is not fit for purpose and without change will not provide appropriate levels of service.
• The scale of the maintenance problem is not understood comprehensively and consistently.
• The local highway network has a complex range of purposes which are not fully understood and therefore not managed or funded appropriately.
Drawing comparisons with the Strategic Roads Networks certainty of funding and investment CIHT argues that local roads are not getting the attention they deserve and that potholes, damaged surfaces and poor reinstatements are harming local governments most valuable asset.
The submitted evidence will be published on the Transport Select Committee's website here shortly.
