Local government think tank Localis launched their report SMART CITIES: FAIR INVESTMENT FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWTH on Friday, which looked at two topics close to the heart of the highways and transportation sector. They are;

  • How can we ensure that investment in physical infrastructure matches the needs of the new, smart society?
  • How can we ensure that the gains of smart infrastructure are evenly and fairly distributed?

In eight key recommendations it addresses topics often ignored by the sector, including how the energy market will be affected by electric vehicles, which regulations affect the role-out of charging infrastructure, and the unequal socio-economic impact of new technologies.

In the context of the UK's road to zero the sector will need to become smarter about how they ensure we have the capacity and capability to grow our green infrastructure.
