2011 Locan Cup won by East Midlands Branch

The East Midlands branch team was victorious at this year’s CIHT Locan Cup golf competition with a score of 119 points, 2 points better than the team from Yorkshire and Humberside. The winning team of Mike Wherrett (captain), John Henry, Bill Douglas, Nikki Morris, Bill Wadrup, Andrew Kelsey, Ian Hodgkin and Andy Turner were presented with the Locan Cup by outgoing Chief Executive, Mary Lewis.

North of Scotland Branch hosted the event, which took place on 11 September at The Nairn Golf Club, and teams from 13 branches took part.

The prize for the best pair score went to Bill Douglas and Nikki Morris with an excellent 44 points. Andrew Kelsey won the prize for the longest drive. The nearest the pin prizes were won by Edward Bill of Northern Ireland Branch and John Colgan of Central Scotland Branch.

In the ladies competition held at nearby Nairn Dunbar Golf Club, seven ladies took part. Chris Pettitt from West Midlands won first prize two points ahead of Rosamond Osborne from North West.

Winning captain, Mike Wherrett, paid tribute to green keeping staff and thanked North of Scotland Branch and the Locan Cup Committee for all their efforts in making it such a successful event.  

Over 140 people attended an excellent dinner on Sunday evening prior to the competition. North of Scotland Branch Chairman Angus MacInnes welcomed all those attending including President David Gillham and Chief Executive Mary Lewis. David Gillham expressed his regret at not being able to join in the golf and thanked all those involved particularly the main sponsors Halcrow and RJ McLeod.

Locan Cup Committee Chairman, Chris Bulman said “Many thanks to Jimmy Smith, the Chairman of the branch golf organising committee and the driving force behind the organisation of this event, which was superb.”  He also thanked all the sponsors as their generous support helped to ensure the event was successful.”

Chris Bulman announced that the 2012 event is to be hosted by North West Branch at Portal Golf Club in Cheshire on 9 and 10 September.
