The Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award is open for entries for 2009. First presented in 1969, the presentation of the Award recognises the successful development of innovative ideas in engineering. It seeks to demonstrate the importance of engineering and the role of engineers and scientists in contributing to national prosperity and international prestige.

The Award is open to any individual or organisation of any size in the public, private or charitable sectors. Applications are invited for engineering innovations in any area of science, engineering or technology. The main criteria by which entries are judged are:

  • Innovation – the successful exploitation of new ideas
  • Commercial success – measured either financially or otherwise
  • Benefit to the community – through a range of implicit or explicit means
A team of distinguished Fellows of the Academy selects a short-list of four finalists, all of whom are invited to participate in the Royal Academy of Engineering Awards Dinner held in June at which the winner will be announced. The Academy liaises with short-listed companies to maximise media coverage and, in addition, the Award winner is given the opportunity to stage an exhibit in the Wellcome Wing of the Science Museum in London.

The winning organisation is honoured with a gold medal, and each of the individual nominees with a bronze medal. There is, in addition, a cash prize of £50,000.
