Chaos on major roads was largely avoided last weekend as heavy snowfall failed to cause disruption for the majority of motorists. Highway authorities have been praised for their efforts in keeping routes open but are warned to remain on their guard for further snow.
Councils are “as well prepared as they have ever been” this winter to keep roads clear according to the Local Government Association. Larger supplies of salt, more new gritters and the greater use of GPS trackers on winter maintenance vehicles have helped to keep most roads open and traffic flowing on council routes said an LGA spokesman.
The Highways Agency said the strategic road network “performed well” during the current wintery weather although snow did shut the Severn Bridge for a time and force the closure of several Trans Pennine routes.
Motorways and major A roads have been treated with ‘pre wet’ salt that is mixed with a solution prior to application to help it stick to the carriageway more effectively. Pre wet salt and other innovative products are now increasingly being used by councils. Authorities who have not moved away from spreading dry salt onto the roads have been urged to consider making the change.
“I encourage all highway managers to explore using products other than traditional dry salt,” said Leicestershire County Council’s environment and transport director Matthew Lugg. “It will save you money and provides a more effective service, but it does require a big investment.”
Mr Lugg added that lessons have been learned from three successive heavy winters and reserves of salt at both a local and national level are plentiful.
