These are the words that have guided H John Parry FCIHT throughout more than five decades of voluntary service to the engineering profession and they remain as relevant now as ever.
Since joining the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) in 1969, John has dedicated significant time and expertise to advancing the profession through learned society activities, technical leadership, and public engagement. His story is a testament to the lifelong personal and professional rewards of getting involved.
John’s early engineering journey began with technical training and practical roles in local government. He went on to hold senior positions in both public and private sectors, including with Derbyshire County Council, Pell Frischmann, Scott Wilson, and Waterman Group. His career spanned strategic infrastructure development, environmental innovation, and policy engagement at the highest levels.
But it is through his voluntary contributions to CIHT and sister institutions such as the ICE that John has truly left a legacy.
From regional branch committee roles to national policy boards, John has served in countless capacities at CIHT:
He also helped shape the Institution’s technical direction, contributing to landmark reports like the Transport State of the Nation series, and leading major conferences that connected industry leaders with government.
Beyond CIHT, John’s influence extended internationally, representing the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) at high-profile global events and helping to shape the UK’s engineering response to climate change, notably delivering the 2012 Buchanan Lecture in Tokyo and London.
H John Parry, Retired
Looking back, John reflects on how volunteering has enriched his career:
“Supporting CIHT through volunteer roles has been one of the most rewarding parts of my professional life. It offers a real chance to give back, shape the future of the industry, and grow your own knowledge and network.”
He encourages early-career professionals to get involved with their regional CIHT committees or technical panels:
“It’s not just about giving your time - it’s about making a difference. You’ll gain as much as you give, and you’ll help drive innovation in our sector.”
John’s passion for advancing the highways and transport sector is matched only by his commitment to sharing knowledge. He has authored over 30 technical papers on topics from sustainable transport to geotechnical design, earning him accolades including the ICE/IMunE Medal for Best Paper (1983) and the CIHT Certificate of Merit (2011).
His innovative thinking has had real-world impact, saving millions through design efficiencies, shaping national guidance, and mentoring the next generation of engineers.
CIHT offers a wide range of opportunities for members to volunteer, whether you’re interested in regional activities, national panels, or technical judging. As John’s story shows, volunteering is not only a way to support your Institution, it’s a path to personal development, professional recognition, and making a lasting difference.
