Fireworks lit up the sky in southern France on Sunday to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the Millau Viaduct, which carries the A75 Clermont-Ferrand-Béziers motorway across the valley of the River Tarn.

More than 46 million vehicles have crossed over the 2460m long structure since it was opened to traffic in 2004 by then French President Jacques Chirac.

The viaduct is 343m high in parts and was built by construction firm Eiffage over a period of three years. It was designed by French engineer Michel Virlogeux and British architect Lord Foster.

“The Millau Viaduct is truly awe inspiring – a fantastic example of civil engineering at its best,” said Institution of Civil Engineers’ president Professor David Balmforth.

“It not only provides a vital link between France and Spain, but captures the imagination of millions as it rises from the valley floor and reaches majestically up through clouds, as if it is floating.”

The contractor used 85,000m3 of concrete and 36,000t of structural steel during construction of the viaduct, which has just seven points of contact with the valley below. At the height of construction more than 500 workers were employed on site.

Professor Balmforth added: “Efforts resulted in a remarkable structure which broke several records – the highest pylons in the world, the highest road bridge deck in Europe and the tallest structure in France, superseding the Eiffel Tower. It is an engineering triumph.”

♦ From a French engineering icon to a Scottish one. Next year will see the 125th birthday of the Forth Bridge, where Arup has been appointed by Network Rail to develop detailed designs for a new visitor centre and bridge walk attraction.
