Norfolk County Council has awarded a £30M seven year highways, transport and professional services contract to Mouchel. The contract will begin next April and could be extended annually to run for a total of 12 years, bringing its value to £60M.

Three shortlisted bidders for the contract included incumbent Mott MacDonald.

The new contract covers the design of a range of highway maintenance and improvement projects, working with Norfolk County Council’s in house design teams.

Mouchel will be responsible for over 9500km of roads, 4000km of footways, 2000 bridges, 375 signal controlled junctions and crossings and 50,000 streetlamps.

The council is hoping that the contract will save it £1M a year, adding to a planned saving of £4.4M from the recent letting of its works contract to Lafarge Tarmac in July, which will also start next April.

Mouchel Infrastructure Services managing director David Virden said: “We are delighted that Norfolk County Council has chosen to work with us on this long term partnering contract. We offer a strong, locally based core team supplemented by a vast range of technical, environmental and project expertise."

The company has also agreed to support science, technology, engineering and mathematics teaching in Norfolk’s schools and an annual apprenticeship programme to provide local employment and training opportunities.
