CIHT has announced the launch of a new bitesize eLearning course, CDM 2015: Roles and Application in Highways and Transportation Projects, designed to support professionals in embedding safer, more effective practices across infrastructure delivery.

Created specifically for highways and transportation practitioners, the course provides a practical introduction to the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015), with a strong focus on real-world application. Through scenario-based learning and applied case studies, participants will gain the skills to identify, manage, and reduce risk while strengthening collaboration across project teams.

Developed in partnership with a panel of leading experts from local authorities, engineering consultancies, and the wider highways sector, the course delivers authoritative and industry-relevant insights. It reinforces the message that CDM is not just about compliance, but about fostering a proactive and sustainable safety culture.

Addressing a Critical Industry Need

The launch comes at a crucial time for the sector. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), 124 workers lost their lives in work-related incidents in Great Britain in 2024/25. Alongside the human cost, enforcement action for CDM breaches can be severe, with fines in recent cases reaching up to £800,000.

This new course equips learners with the knowledge needed to mitigate risk and contribute to safer project outcomes across highways and transportation projects.

Designed for busy professionals, the course is delivered in bite-sized modules and can be completed in just 2 hours of CPD.

Key topics include:

• Understand the purpose and scope of CDM 2015 regulations
• Identify key duty holders and explain their roles and responsibilities
• Apply the principles of prevention to manage risk effectively
• Recognise when projects are notifiable to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
• Describe key project documentation, including PCI, CPP, and the Health & Safety File
• Understand the wider legal framework surrounding construction health and safety
• Identify common breaches of CDM regulations and their consequences
• Apply CDM principles to real-world highways and transportation scenarios

The course concludes with a final knowledge check, requiring an 80% pass mark.
