On Saturday the government announced £2 billion for walking and cycling as part of the £5 billion bus and cycle fund announced in February. This is a response to the need to ensure that social distancing can practically take place, but also to lock in some of the health benefits from increased active travel and reduced air pollution.
In this podcast Justin Ward interviews Phil Jones. Phil has over 30 years’ experience in the planning and design of development infrastructure, with particular expertise in traffic analysis, transport planning and highway design.
The discussion focuses on what investments would be most effective to increase walking and cycling, if you can you buy yourself to increased active travel, and what needs to happen to ensure the investment is delivered effectively
Phil also gives his views on what the recent government announcement might mean for walking and cycling. The importance of maintaining safety as well as the sense of safety is important to get more people cycling. Phil, with others, has been working with the government to update the Department for Transport's technical guidance for cycling infrastructure design, the most recent version of which is from 2008 and is urging government to now get this published.
