Professor Scarlett McNally

Professor Scarlett McNally is a consultant orthopaedic Surgeon at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, President of the Medical Women's Federation, deputy director of the Centre for Perioperative Care and Honorary Clinical Professor at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Scarlett has sat on four British Medical Association committees and five Academy of Medical Royal Colleges’ committees and was lead author for the Academy’s ‘Exercise the Miracle Cure’. She has a fortnightly column in the British Medical Journal with articles on how to fix the NHS. Scarlett wants each person to achieve their best, and environments and expectations that enable exercise to reduce ill-health and the need for social care.

Quotes from the podcast:

If you exercise at a dose of 150 minutes per week, which is about 21 minutes a day; it reduces your risk of dementia by 30%, stroke by 30%, breast cancer by 25%, bowel cancer by around 40% and type 2 diabetes by around 40%.
We need to move a little bit from just seeing what the individual can do to seeing what society can do, and what environments can do so we can normalise being active
We need to stop seeing the world through our windscreens
