2nd May 2025

The CIHT Engineering Professional Standards Panel (EPSP) has introduced a new form for sponsors supporting applicants for Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration. This form is designed to encourage sponsors to provide more comprehensive and constructive support to applicants throughout their professional registration journey.

Individuals applying for CEng, IEng or EngTech through CIHT must have two sponsors who provide a sponsor statement confirming the applicant’s readiness for the level of registration which they are pursuing. The EPSP has noticed that the level of detail provided by sponsors can vary significantly and recognise that engaged sponsors can play a significant role in improving an applicant’s chance of success.

Whilst there may be some crossover, it’s important to remember that sponsors are not the same as mentors. While both sponsors and mentors play crucial roles in an applicant’s professional development, their roles differ significantly. Sponsors are responsible for evaluating an applicant’s readiness for professional registration and providing detailed feedback on their Portfolio of Evidence (PoE), whereas mentors offer ongoing guidance, support, and advice to help applicants develop their skills and navigate their professional registration journey.

The new form requires sponsors to address each area of UK-SPEC (Competence A-E). This includes providing examples of how they believe the applicant has met the required standard for each competence. Additionally, for resit candidates, sponsors must highlight how the applicant has addressed the feedback from their previous professional review.

Sponsors play a crucial role in the professional registration process. As above, their insight and feedback can significantly impact an applicant’s likelihood of success. By thoroughly reviewing the applicant’s PoE and providing constructive feedback, sponsors can help ensure that applicants are well-prepared for their professional review.

Cat Goumal, Head of Education and Professional Development at CIHT said "Alongside mentors, sponsors are a key part of the professional registration process. Their detailed assessments and honest feedback are invaluable in preparing applicants for their professional review."

Gordon Gray, Chair of the EPSP said "The new sponsor form is a step forward in ensuring that applicants are consistently supported. It encourages sponsors to engage deeply with the applicant’s work and provide meaningful feedback, which is essential for maintaining the high standards of our profession."
