The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) has partnered with Transport for London, Network Rail, HS2, the National Skills Academy for Rail and the Young Rail Professionals, to launch a new virtual world on the careers website
Plotr.
Plotr, a careers information website, helps 11-24 year olds discover and explore careers to suit them.
By working together and creating a single world, CIHT and its partners are enabling young people to learn more about the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) opportunities that are available across the transport industry from large employers to SMEs as well as the softer skills that they may need to develop.
The Plotr world also promotes the roles where there are, or will be, skills shortages, so that young people appreciate how valuable these skills are and will consider studying them. Users can also discover how they can make a difference to customers and a range of communities by choosing to work in the transport industry.
Sue Percy, CIHT Chief Executive, said:
“The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation is delighted to collaborate and partner with other influential transport organisations to launch the Transport Careers virtual world on the Plotr website.
“The transport infrastructure sector is suffering severe skills shortages at a time when investment in major projects is increasing and the demand for skilled technicians, planners, designers, engineers and managers is growing.
“Our industry needs to attract more young people from all backgrounds into a career in Highways and Transportation. To encourage people to find out more about employment opportunities in our industry, we must raise awareness of the variety of interesting job roles and exciting career paths on offer in a way that catches the imagination.
“There is no ‘quick fix’ to solving skills shortages - finding, training, retaining and developing the next generation of Highways & Transportation professionals will take time – but initiatives like this one will help to achieve this long-term skills goal.”
In April this year CIHT launched a suite of new
careers material for use in Primary and Secondary Schools, Colleges and Universities. The interactive set of materials is designed to highlight and showcase the exciting options that make up a career in transport. The contents and design were produced with the help of CIHT’s Careers Material Group. You can register your interest in receiving a pack by
