The strategy includes:

  • new measures to make transport fully accessible for all passengers by 2030
  • up to £300 million made available for improvements to the network
  • part of a government drive to build a society that works for all.

A key announcement is a recommendation for local authorities to pause shared space schemes and suspend Local Transport Note 1/11 while government undertakes research and updates guidance.

On wider public realm design, the strategy recognises there 'is a need to go further to ensure guidance is up to date and relevant, and that practitioners have the skills to use it effectively'.

Sue Percy, CEO CIHT welcomed the strategy, and said:

“CIHT has been instrumental in promoting the consideration of accessible transport for everyone , and has been working with DfT and others to promote and press for an inclusive transport system."

“The institution has highlighted to the Department that proper consideration should be given to the needs of all when considering the design of streets and the public realm”.  CIHT responded to the Accessibility Action Plan consultation.

Sue Percy reflected that:  “There was still a long way to go to deliver a genuinely inclusive transport system but the Government’s strategy signals its clear intent to take this agenda forwards in collaboration with other organisations including CIHT”.

“We look forward to working with the DfT to create an inclusive transport system for everyone”.
