Around 60 professionals from organisations across the north east joined CIHT President Geoff Allister at Newcastle’s Assembly Rooms to hear industry leaders outline the present position on electric vehicles in the north east of England.
Steve Carol from CENEX kicked off proceedings outlining the types of vehicles available, funding options for vehicle purchase, national demonstration projects and vehicle trials.
Colin Heron of One NorthEast spoke about the pitfalls and hurdles encountered in developing the north east Plugged In Places initiative, such as where do you put charging points? and how do you support the vehicles once they are on the road?
Michael Murphy of Newcastle City Council addressed the delegates on the role of the City Council in the delivery and installation of the recharging infrastructure, such as developing an appropriately skilled workforce.
John Austin of Future Transport Systems discussed SwitchEV, one of eight initiatives to get electric vehicles on the road throughout the country. A multi-partner research and development project to develop and assess – new vehicles, vehicle usage and infrastructure integration.
The event closed with a panel discussion chaired by North Eastern Branch Chairman Richard Smith.
