Extension of the Northern Line to Battersea is set to be carried out by a Ferrovial Agroman/Laing O’Rourke joint venture.
The partnership has been selected as preferred bidder to deliver the £600M project to connect the London Underground to the capital's largest urban regeneration site.
Work will involve the design and build of the new line from Kennington and the construction of two new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea.
A contract is set to be awarded towards the end of August subject to final approval from the Transport Secretary.
The winning joint venture beat competition from a BAM Nuttall/Balfour Beatty partnership, Bechtel/Strabag and Costain/Dragados/Sir Robert McAlpine.
A Transport for London spokesman said: “Other tenderers have been notified and should we fail to reach agreement with the preferred bidder London Underground may reopen negotiations with those who have been stood down.”
The Northern Line extension will provide an essential transport link to support a major increase in residents and businesses expected as a result of regeneration around Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea.
Proposed start of work for the extension is spring 2015 and stations could open to passengers by 2020. New tunnels will connect to the existing Northern Line south of Kennington station at the 'Kennington Loop', currently used by terminating trains.
Once complete the new link will cut journey times from Battersea to the West End and the City to 15 minutes.
