Figures released this week by UCAS show that less and less students are choosing to study civil engineering degrees at university.

The UCAS data showed there were just 22,827 applications to take the subject at university in 2012 – down 12.1% from 2011.

As stated in CIHT’s Manifesto for Transport Infrastructure, ‘The Future for Highways and Transportation’, the Institution believes that, “With fewer graduates entering the industry and an ageing professional population, UK Government need to continue to support apprenticeship schemes as a way of attracting new entrants, providing training relevant to industry needs, and assisting the UK to compete successfully in global markets. UK Governments also need to recognise and support the contribution made by Further And Higher Education and consider incentives to encourage young people to pursue careers in engineering and related occupations."
