On their bikes! CIHT celebrate National Cycle to Work Day

28th Aug 2015

CIHT’s cyclists are marking National Cycle to Work Day on 3 September, and hoping to inspire colleagues and members to get on their bikes and to think about encouraging others through their transport work.

National Cycle to Work Day aims to encourage everyone - not only the hundreds of thousands already doing it - to cycle to work for at least one day. Employers will stage related events and many cycle shops are offering free bike checks for new and existing commuters. More details at: www.cycletoworkday.org.

CIHT’s cyclists
CIHT’s Britannia Walk office in London include seven cycle commuters. That’s almost one-third of the staff, making cycling one of the top commuting choices, either for whole journeys, or to complement rail trips.

Daniel Isichei, Director of Communications, David Mead, Education & Training Manager, Louise Evans, Membership Manager and Duncan Neish, Senior Technical Affairs Officer, also cycle to Britannia Walk on a regular basis.

Hackney’s other carriages
CIHT’s Britannia Walk offices lie in the London Borough of Hackney. While our cycling mode share is high, it’s not exceptional for the area. The 2011 Census found that 15% of Hackney residents commuted by bike, and it’s one of the only parts of in the UK where cycle-to-work outnumbered car-borne commuters. In neighbouring Islington 10% of commuters ride, and their numbers may well have overtaken cars drivers and passengers (also 10%) since 2011.
In contrast to Cambridge - the only local authority with more cycle commuters - Hackney isn’t a traditional cycling hotspot. The 1991 Census found only 4% of residents cycling to work, compared with 29% driving.

Cllr Feryal Demirci, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Sustainability, said: “It is fantastic to see Hackney-based organisations such as CIHT taking part in Cycle to Work Day. Hackney is already London’s top cycling borough and initiatives like this encourage more people to get out on the saddle and see for themselves how easy and enjoyable it is to get about by bike. Hopefully, as a result, we will see even more of our residents and employees take up cycling as their first and long-term travelling option.”

Cities outside London also experienced major increases in cycling to work: Brighton, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield all saw increases of 80% or more between 2001 and 2011. CIHT’s Planning for Cycling guidelines can help others pursue similar progress.
