Atkins has been announced as Peterborough City Council’s preferred bidder for a 10 year highways services contract, worth around £76M over the term.
The deal, which includes road maintenance, street lighting and gully cleansing, could save the client £750,000 every year. The contract is to begin this October.
Peterborough City Council leader Cllr Marco Cereste said: "This new contract has the potential to save the council, and therefore its taxpayers, in the region of £7.5M in the next 10 years. At a time when we are receiving less money from Government, this money can be re-invested into providing other services for residents.”
Peterborough City Council has also announced that essential refurbishment work is to begin next Monday to Longthorpe Bridge, which carries a road across the A1260 Nene Parkway to the west of the city.
Work will include concrete repairs, replacement of bridge bearings and reconstruction of pier tops that support the road using hydro demolition techniques.
Peterborough City Council’s head of planning, transport and engineering Simon Machen said: "The city's parkway system was built in the 1970s and as a result all the bridges have required maintenance at a similar time. Longthorpe bridge is the final bridge on the Nene Parkway to be refurbished.”
