Project management for a key aspect of one of the world’s largest transport infrastructure schemes has been awarded to Jacobs Engineering. The company has won a contract to provide consultancy services on part of the $36Bn Doha Metro in Qatar.
The metro scheme will see four lines built covering the Greater Doha area, either underground, at ground level or on elevated structures. The entire network will cover around 215km and include 100 stations.
Phase one of the project covers 93km of route on the Red, Green and Gold lines. Jacobs is managing the delivery of the underground works for 26km of the Red line, running from Mesaieed in the south through the centre of Doha to Al Khor in the north. Construction of phase one is expected to be complete by 2019.
The line also branches to the New Doha International Airport to serve the city’s growing population as well as visitors expected for the 2022 World Cup.
Jacobs Group vice president Bob Duff said: “We look forward to bringing our global infrastructure capabilities and project management consultancy resources together to deliver this important project.”
The Doha Metro forms part of the Qatar Integrated Rail Project which includes long distance passenger services and freight rail. The total distance of the state’s rail network will eventually be around 750 km.
