On 23 November in the Autumn Statement the Chancellor announced new funding of £1.3bn over this Parliament to help road infrastructure projects, £1.1bn of that for the local road network.

The Department for Transport have today set out further details of that investment in the 'Roads Investment: The roads funding package'.  The document breaks down the allocations by region, and that the government will announce more local major transport schemes that are expected to be funded from the £1.8 billion Local Growth Fund allocations.

£70 million of funding from the Pothole Action Fund will be allocated by formula to local highway authorities in 2017/18. This funding is on top of the £6 billion the government is already allocating to councils in England up to 2021.

Several major new improvement schemes have been announced including dualling of the A66, improving the M60 around Manchester and the Oxford/Cambridge Expressway.

Chris Grayling has also announced £175 million of the additional funding for local roads will be used to upgrade some of England’s most dangerous roads. The department will be inviting proposals from local authorities responsible for the 50 highest risk roads.
