Expert advice in highways and traffic policy is sought by the House of Commons Transport Select Committee, which is advertising for an individual to offer support on a consultative basis. The successful applicant will provide briefing material for MPs on the Committee and assist in the preparation of reports.
One major piece of work likely to involve the successful applicant is a Committee inquiry into the strategic roads network. This follows the Chancellor’s announcement in last week’s Spending Review that the Government is planning “the largest programme of investment in our roads for half a century.”
Committee chair Louise Ellman MP (pictured) said: “We will consider the Government’s forthcoming proposals for improving our roads and the implications for all road users.” A call for evidence will be issued by the Committee later this year.
Last week the Transport Select Committee invited members of the public for their views on whether free parking in town centres would encourage them to shop locally and to what extent parking restrictions and charges put them off.
It has also called for evidence on passenger transport in isolated communities. “We will be looking at how best to meet the needs of passengers in rural areas, island communities and suburban or urban areas with poor transport connections,” Louise Ellman added. “We are particularly interested in the provision of bus and rail services as well as the role of community transport services.”
