Scotland’s new National Transport Strategy for the next two decades, which states that it will protect the climate and improve lives, has been laid before Parliament today (05/02/2020).
The Strategy sets out the actions that have to be taken to meet The Scottish Government’s ambitious climate change targets. It acknowledges that there needs to be a range of activity, including technological change to ultra-low emission vehicles, altering people’s travel behaviour through improved use of public and active travel modes, as well as a reduction in the demand for unsustainable transport.
CIHT has worked with Transport Scotland on their National Transport Strategy and also produced a response to the consultation on the strategy in October 2019. In August 2019, Neil Johnstone, Vice President of CIHT, said of the draft strategy: "The draft strategy makes some bold policy proposals to address the wide range of challenges facing transport now and in the future.".
CIHT strongly welcomes the production of national transport strategy. It has been a key recommendation of CIHT to ask Governments to produce strategies for transport as a whole. The fact that the vision is built upon the recognition that transport is a key enabler and contributor to key policy areas is welcomed.
