The virtual ceremony saw winning entries as well as highly commended and commended schemes announced in 11 categories across three themes; Supporting One Another, Innovation and Shaping the Future. Mark Stevens of Suffolk Highways was also named as Transportation Professional of the Year.
CIHT President Martin Tugwell introduced the webcast and praised the quality of entries to the 2020 Awards. He added: “It is great to be celebrating this year’s awards on International Women in Engineering Day. CIHT is an inclusive organisation working to encourage more women and people from all backgrounds into the industry.
“It has been great to see the diversity of our sector represented in the shortlisted entries,” he said, adding: “To be shortlisted for the awards this year is a feat in itself.”
The overall winning entry from GRAHAM – which also took the CIHT / Fosroc Engineering Award – involved the innovative installation of a pedestrian and cycle bridge over five railway tracks near Stratford in East London.
A self propelled modular transporter was used to manoeuvre and position the 66m long Carpenters Land Bridge, and the installation was completed during a single railway possession, 15 hours early, on Christmas Day.
Announcing the Overall Winner, CIHT chief executive Sue Percy said the scheme “used engineering knowledge and expertise to produce a creative and innovative solution, and can provide a model for others to follow”, noting also its benefits for local communities and businesses.
Announcement of Mark Stevens as Transportation Professional of the Year was made by Martin Tugwell. He said Mark has been a visible presence in local highways for some time and has always demonstrated the values of CIHT.
“The judges highlighted his work in several key areas this year – assisting in the development of CIHT’s Local Highways Review, helping in the development of the Highways Sector Council and working closely with Government to develop an approach to the Covid-19 situation for the sector.”
