Schemes receiving the funds from the Department for Transport will be supported by local contributions totaling £1.6M.

The largest scheme to receive funding is a £690,000 project on Tyne & Wear to encourage families to use push bikes for the school run. The local authority will also receive £295,000 to help make public transport use, cycling and walking simpler and more appealing around the A1 Western Bypass corridor near Gateshead and Newcastle.

In West Yorkshire a project to help local jobseekers to access work will receive £590,000 through the fund and in Worcestershire a scheme to improve walking and cycling in the town of Redditch will get £110,000.

The city of York has been promised £100,000 to continue a project to help households access more sustainable transport and in Warwickshire £92,000 has been pledged to encourage residents and tourists in Stratford upon Avon to make better use of bicycles and cycle facilities.

Other areas to benefit from funding to encourage sustainable transport use are Staffordshire, Southend on Sea and Luton.

Transport Minister Baroness Kramer said: “These successful schemes have changed how people travel, with communities now making healthier and greener choices.”
