The CIHT Annual Conference, taking place on 7 March in London will rise to this challenge and show how transport infrastructure can play a key role in increasing the UK’s productivity. Highlights of the day will include:

Increasing Productivity with Highways England

Mel Clarke, Director of Customer Service from Highways England will reveal how Highways England is helping its customers to be more productive. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of what Highways England are seeking to achieve on the Strategic Highways Network. Mel will update the conference on the progress that they have made in the last two years and what the next stages of delivery will be.

Future mobility: a government response to improving productivity

Minister for State, Jesse Norman will share his views on how transport is crucial for the productivity of the country. Delegates will have the opportunity to gain an insight into the Industrial and Future Mobility Strategies. This will provide essential information for highways and transportation professionals who want to know how government is expecting the transport sector to deliver these key strategies.

Providing a solution to the local highway maintenance challenge

Matthew Lugg, CIHT President will present the latest findings into the Improving Local Highways review:

Matthew said:
“Improving Local Highways will provide a framework for government on how we can provide sustainable solutions to change the way we deliver local highway maintenance. We must improve the proliferation of pot-holes we see across the UK and improve the delivery of our transport services to people.”

“The review will highlight real opportunities for us to look at how we can change the way we not only deliver and maintain local highway roads but also how we can operate as a sustainable industry in the future.”

Technology: Automation, Innovation & Disruption: Procuring and delivering services

A panel session featuring Highways England, Uber UK and London City Airport will focus on the changing shape of the industry focusing on technology, automation, innovation and disruption and how that leads to improved productivity. The panel will explore new developments including off-site manufacturing, lessons from improving the productivity of transport networks and future mobility.

Led by Dr Sue Sharland, a non-Executive Director at the Transport Systems Catapult and a past President of CIHT, attendees will hear from those who are changing the way the transport sector does things.

The event will also feature:

  • International, National and Regional responses to productivity
    Facilitated by Martin Tugwell, Programme Director for England’s Economic Heartland and Vice-President of CIHT, this session features a New Zealand perspective from Samantha Gain, IPWEA NZ; Scotland’s approach: Alison Irvine, Director Transport Strategy and Appraisal, Transport Scotland and Fiona Brown, Head of Strategic Planning, Transport Scotland and Transport for the North’s strategy: Peter Molyneux, Major Roads Director, Transport for the North

  • People and Productivity Showcase
    This session will highlight how the UK can drive transport infrastructure through practical changes including ways to: implement upskilling, develop and retain talent and improving the health and wellbeing of the workforce.

  • Better Planning for Better Transport & Places
    Providing an update to the latest advice on how to ensure development is put in place in the right places with sustainable transport links.
