It has never been more important for members to continuously develop their skills and knowledge to respond to the challenges facing the sector.

Under the CIHT Code of Conduct, members are required to identify and undertake CPD which is relevant to them.  Members are expected to record at least 25 hours of CPD each year and CIHT provides CPD opportunities including through our new digital learning platform, CIHT Learn. Each year, members can be randomly selected to submit their CPD record and Development Action Plan. To better support you to meet your CPD requirements, CIHT is creating a CPD policy statement which will clarify what is expected from you, what can count as CPD and how you can meet the CPD requirements. We want to hear from you about your thoughts and experience of CPD.

Currently, you as a member decide the CPD topics you need to learn about but we want to explore how we can support members to achieve the learning they need to meet the overarching themes of climate action, professionalism and equality diversity and inclusion from the  CIHT 2022+ strategy starting with the introduction of a requirement to undertake some of your CPD in developing your climate literacy.

We are starting with climate literacy because transport remains one of the largest sources of the Green House Gas (GHG) emissions that are driving the climate emergency. Governments around the world are committed to achieving very large and very rapid reductions in the GHG emissions associated with transport and transport infrastructure. in the UK the government’s own pathway points to a need for a close to 50% reduction by 2030 if the country is to stay on course to meet its legally binding objective of Net Zero emissions by 2050.

To support you to respond to the new demands created by this challenge, we are developing a simple framework that will provide guidance on key areas of knowledge to support transport professionals play their role in eliminating or reducing GHGs. This will be supported by guidance to help you access appropriate CPD. Once the framework is in place, the Institution plans to introduce the requirement for all Members to undertake climate related CPD from 2023.

Please complete this short survey by 5 June 2022 to tell us about your current experience of undertaking CPD, your thoughts on what should be included in a CPD framework on climate literacy and what sort of support you want from the CIHT to meet the CPD obligations.
