The Department for Transport has today (25 February) announced that available funding for chargepoint installation grants has increased. Funding is now available for up to £500 per charge point installed.
The funding uplift will cover almost half the cost of a typical domestic charge point installation. This scheme is planned to run until March 2027.
The grants will encourage more drivers to access cheaper domestic electricity rates at home or work.
Currently renters, flat owners, homeowners without driveways and businesses are required to pay VAT on electric vehicle charging, making it more expensive than those with access to private chargepoints.
Expanded access to home charging will encourage more households make the switch and UK businesses gear up for the EV revolution.
The funding increase is the latest action from the UK Government to tackle the two main barriers to driving electric – upfront costs and charging availability.
The updates also announced by the Department for Transport will simplify the currently available EV charge point support schemes by reducing 8 grant types down to 5, streamlining the system making choosing and accessing the grants easier.
Last year, a £25 million scheme was launched making it easier for residents without driveways to install home chargers.
This support is accessed through local authorities, the scheme supports the installation of discreet, embedded pavement channels and is additional to the expanded charge point grant.
Those with on street parking could get help with installing the charger and the cross-pavement channel.
The following updates will be introduced from 1 April 2026:
people living in rented accommodation, flat owners, residential landlords, households with on-street parking and businesses will all be able to receive higher grants of up to £500 per charge point (rising from the previous discount of £350)
schools will be eligible for grants of up to £2,000 per socket, building on 3,700 sockets installed to date
More information about the announcement is available to read here.
CIHT looks forward to continuing to work with the Department for Transport and the UK Government to encourage decarbonization and the transition to electric vehicles.
