The DfT have announced funding to support local projects over 3 years from 2017 to 2020.  This forms part of a wider government package of more than £300 million to boost walking and cycling during the current parliament.  All English transport authorities (outside London) were invited to bid for the funding click here to see the list of authorities who have received support.

According to the DfT this cash would help deliver:

  • more safety and awareness training for cyclists
  • extra secure cycle storage
  • bike repair and maintenance courses
  • road safety measures
  • mapping information for pedestrians
  • real time bus information through smart phone apps or information at bus stops
  • increased focus on car sharing clubs

Andrew Hugill, CIHT director of Policy and Technical Affairs commented: “CIHT supports the government's vision that walking and cycling should be a normal part of everyday life and the natural travel choice for shorter journeys. CIHT has consistently called for certainty of adequate funding and resources to deliver the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS) and look forward to seeing the results of this funding leading to changes in the way people make every day journeys.
