The prime minster announces £5bn investment plan to aid coronavirus recovery

Speaking in the West Midlands, the prime minister will pledge to use the coronavirus crisis "to tackle this country's great unresolved challenges".

As part of a "new deal", the prime minister will set out plans to accelerate £5bn on infrastructure projects.

The prime minister will say that he wants to use the coronavirus crisis as an opportunity to "to build the homes, to fix the NHS, to tackle the skills crisis, to mend the indefensible gap in opportunity and productivity and connectivity between the regions of the UK".

The government has set out a £5bn investment in an infrastructure plan that includes investments in highways and transportation:

£100m for 29 road network projects including bridge repairs in Sandwell and improving the A15 in the Humber region
£500,000 - £1m for each area in the town's fund to spend on improvements to parks, high street and transport

Sue Percy, Chief Executive CIHT says:

"CIHT welcomes the announcements of planned investment in the highway network which CIHT called for in the Improving Local Highways review. Today's announcement acknowledges the contribution that the highways and transportation sector can give the post-Covid-19 recovery to restart the economy but needs to be in line with the government's own decarbonisation targets."
